Meet John Silver, the charismatic cyborg pirate from Treasure Planet: A New Universe, with this POP! Disney No. 1822 figurine produced by Funko. This figure captures the instantly recognisable appearance of the cook aboard the RLS Legacy, a character who is both Jim Hawkins’ mentor and the leader of the pirates setting out in search of Captain Flint’s fabled treasure. The figure stands approximately 10.7 cm tall.
The design captures the blend of traditional pirate and science fiction that characterises Silver: a dark tricorn hat, a long coat, red and green striped trousers, a gold earring and imposing cybernetic parts. His mechanical eye, arm and leg occupy one side of his body, whilst his human hand holds little Morph, the pink shape-shifting creature who accompanies him at the start of the film. This combination of organic and mechanical elements is directly linked to the character’s original design.

John Silver is one of the central characters in *Treasure Planet*, a Disney animated film directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and released in 2002. The film is a loose adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel *Treasure Island*, set in a world blending maritime adventure and science fiction. In the film, Silver is reimagined as a cyborg – half-man, half-machine – officially serving as the cook aboard the RLS Legacy.
During the voyage to Treasure Planet, Silver bonds with Jim Hawkins and gradually becomes a true mentor figure to him. He teaches him how to work on board the ship, encourages him to have confidence in his abilities and plays a direct part in his personal development. This relationship is one of the film’s major emotional threads.
However, this relationship is complicated by Silver’s true identity: he is also the leader of the pirates plotting a mutiny to seize Captain Flint’s treasure. When Jim discovers the betrayal of the man he regarded as a mentor, the two characters find themselves at odds despite the genuine affection that has developed between them. Disney thus presents Silver as a deliberately ambivalent character, torn between his quest for treasure and his growing attachment to Jim.
The visual design of John Silver also represents a technical feature of the film. Whilst the majority of the characters were animated primarily by hand, Silver combines traditional animation with computer-generated elements for his mechanical parts. The directors explain that they transformed Long John Silver’s classic attributes — notably his wooden leg — into cybernetic components in order to adapt the famous pirate to the futuristic world of *Treasure Planet*.
POP! No. 1822 captures precisely this visual and narrative duality: the massive, mechanised pirate is accompanied by little Morph in his hand, evoking both his role as leader of the mutineers and the character’s warmer, more endearing side.
