Origin and character background (Lore)
Kuromi is one of the characters from the Sanrio universe. Recognisable by her black headband adorned with a pink skull and her little imp’s tail, she deliberately cultivates a rebellious and mischievous appearance. Sanrio, however, describes her as a much more feminine character than her appearance suggests, who particularly enjoys writing in her diary and reading romance novels.
Kuromi is also portrayed as My Melody’s self-proclaimed but friendly rival. She enjoys causing minor disasters and leads her own band, ‘Kuromi’s 5’, comprising Nyanmi, Wanmi, Konmi and Chumi. Her blend of punk attitude, humour and a taste for all things cute explains the visual contrast frequently used on her merchandise.
The design of this mug capitalises precisely on this duality: the black background, skulls, lightning bolts and chequered patterns evoke Kuromi’s mischievous nature, whilst the bright colours and more ‘kawaii’ depictions of the character retain the visual identity characteristic of Sanrio’s creations.
