Origin and background of the licence

Kiki’s Delivery Service is an animated film by Studio Ghibli, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in Japan in 1989. The story follows Kiki, a thirteen-year-old witch who, in keeping with tradition, leaves her family to live on her own for a year and develop her independence.

Accompanied by Jiji, her faithful black cat, Kiki settles in the coastal town of Koriko. Thanks to her ability to fly on a broomstick, she sets up a delivery service there and gradually discovers the responsibilities of independent living, whilst making new friends.

Jiji plays a central role in Kiki’s daily life. An expressive and often cautious companion, he brings a touch of humour and warmth to the story. His instantly recognisable appearance and his role alongside the young witch have made him one of the iconic characters of the film and the Studio Ghibli catalogue.
