Origin and character background (Lore)

Jiji is the faithful black cat of Kiki, the heroine of *Kiki’s Delivery Service*. As the young witch’s travelling companion and confidant, he accompanies her when she leaves her family to fulfil the tradition whereby a thirteen-year-old witch must spend a year away from home to complete her training.

Settling in the coastal town of Koriko, Kiki and Jiji find their place at a bakery, the starting point for the delivery service that Kiki gradually sets up using her flying broomstick. Jiji brings a touch of humour and warmth to the story, whilst reflecting his young mistress’s doubts and discoveries.

His simple design, with his black fur, large ears and expressive eyes, has made him one of the most recognisable characters in the Ghibli universe. This Jiji ‘Shelves’ mini towel thus features one of the most popular mascots from *Kiki’s Delivery Service* in a compact and practical textile accessory.
