Origin and character background (Lore)

Inuyasha is the protagonist of the eponymous series created by Rumiko Takahashi. He is a hanyō, that is to say, a being born of the union between a powerful yōkai and a human.

This dual heritage explains his instantly recognisable appearance: he has a human form, but retains several supernatural features, notably his dog-like ears, his claws and a strength far superior to that of an ordinary human.

His fate is closely linked to that of Kagome Higurashi, a modern-day teenager who accidentally falls down an ancient well and finds herself transported several centuries into the past, to the Sengoku period.

Kagome soon discovers that her arrival is linked to the mysterious Shikon Jewel, a gem capable of greatly enhancing the powers of both humans and demons.

When the Pearl is shattered and its fragments scattered across the land, Inuyasha and Kagome set out together to find them before they fall into the wrong hands.

Inuyasha fights primarily with Tessaiga, a powerful sword forged from one of his father’s fangs. The weapon possesses several techniques that evolve as the story progresses and becomes essential in his battles against increasingly dangerous foes.

Among his most significant enemies is Naraku, a being responsible for numerous tragedies affecting Inuyasha, Kagome and their companions. His quest to reunite the fragments of the Shikon Pearl forms one of the series’ main storylines.

Inuyasha also has a particularly complex relationship with his half-brother Sesshomaru, a pure-blooded yōkai who initially despises his human heritage. Their rivalry is largely fuelled by their father’s legacy and the possession of Tessaiga.

Throughout his journey with Kagome, Miroku, Sango and Shippo, Inuyasha undergoes a profound transformation. Behind his impulsive and sometimes brutal temperament, a character gradually emerges who is deeply devoted to his companions and willing to risk his life to protect them.
