Hatsune Miku is a virtual singer developed by Crypton Future Media. She is one of the Piapro Characters, alongside Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, Megurine Luka, MEIKO and KAITO.
Hatsune Miku was originally created as a character associated with voice synthesis software, enabling musicians to have her perform melodies and lyrics.
Her first version was released in Japan on 31 August 2007 as part of Crypton Future Media’s Character Vocal Series. Her original design, instantly recognisable by her long blue-green pigtails, was created by KEI.
The character’s official profile describes her as a 16-year-old girl, standing 158 cm tall. Her name can be translated as ‘the first sound from the future’, an expression that perfectly sums up the character’s original concept.
Miku’s original voice was developed from recordings of the Japanese actress Saki Fujita, which were reworked to enable creators to produce their own vocal performances.
But Hatsune Miku quickly outgrew her role as a mere software mascot. Thanks to the thousands of songs, illustrations, music videos and creations produced by her community, she has gradually become a true icon of Japanese digital culture.
Crypton also points out that over 100,000 songs featuring Hatsune Miku have been released worldwide, illustrating the exceptional scale of the creative phenomenon built around the character.
Unlike a character from a traditional manga or anime, Miku does not have a single, fixed backstory. Artists are free to reinterpret her through a multitude of different costumes, settings and themes.
