Officially licensed by Harry Potter, this ceramic mug by Grupo Erik features the famous birthday cake given to Harry by Rubeus Hagrid during their first proper meeting in *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*. With its pastel pink finish and deliberately clumsy lettering, it brings one of the most recognisable props from the first film straight onto a mug designed for everyday use.
The design is inspired by the decoration on the cake made for Harry’s eleventh birthday. On the front is the inscription ‘HAPPEE BIRTHDAE HARRY’ in blue-green letters, criss-crossed by pink lines reminiscent of the cracks visible on the cake. The exterior is a very pale shade of pink, whilst the interior and handle feature a deeper shade of pink. The Harry Potter logo is also printed on the inside, near the rim.
Hagrid’s cake features in a pivotal moment in *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*. After the Dursleys had tried to evade the letters from Hogwarts by taking refuge in a remote hut, Rubeus Hagrid burst in on the evening of Harry’s eleventh birthday. He brings him his first proper birthday cake and, more importantly, reveals that he is a wizard destined to study at Hogwarts. The official Harry Potter website describes this pink cake, decorated with the words ‘Happee Birthdae Harry’, as one of the symbols of this radical change in the young boy’s life.
This gift holds particular significance because Harry grew up with the Dursleys, where his birthdays were largely ignored. The cake prepared by Hagrid thus represents much more than a simple treat: it marks the discovery of his origins, his powers and the wizarding world. The official website notes that it was a large, slightly squashed chocolate cake, served with an impromptu meal in the hut.
The design of this mug directly draws on this now-iconic scene, right down to the deliberately uneven handwriting of the birthday message, transforming the cake given by Hagrid into an everyday piece of tableware.
