Origin and character’s universe
Released in cinemas in 1999 to celebrate the turn of the millennium, the animated feature film Fantasia 2000 follows in the noble tradition of the 1940 experimental masterpiece, blending sublime animated sequences with renowned pieces of classical music. TheSpring Sprite is the central heroine of the film’s eighth and final segment, set entirely to Igor Stravinsky’s ballet suite The Firebird. A benevolent elven creature dwelling in the heart of a sacred valley, she awakens to fulfil her cyclical duty: to restore the flora, bring the trees to bud and repaint nature in vibrant colours after winter. Her poetic quest turns into a tale of survival and rebirth when she accidentally awakens the destructive spirit of the volcano, embodied by the Firebird. This magnificent character embodies the resilience of the Earth and the eternal beauty of life, cementing this sequence as one of the most memorable in Disney’s history.
