EVANGELION - Rei Ayanami "Uniform" - Figure XStellar 16cm

This XStellar figurine from SEGA Goods depicts Rei Ayanami in her school uniform, as she appears in *Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition*.

Rei is depicted sitting on a school chair, her legs slightly together and her hands resting one on top of the other on her lap. Her upright posture and reserved expression capture the character’s reserved nature. The sculpture features her short, light blue hair and red eyes, two of the most instantly recognisable elements of her appearance.

Her uniform consists of a turquoise pinafore dress worn over a white short-sleeved blouse, with a red bow at the collar. Long black socks and white shoes complete the outfit. The school chair forms an integral part of the composition, transforming the figure into a small classroom scene rather than a simple standing pose.

This XStellar version has also been designed to be displayed alongside the Shikinami Asuka Langley ‘School Uniform Ver.’ figure from the same range. Whilst Asuka strikes an energetic pose, leaning on a desk, Rei sits calmly in her chair, creating a contrast that reflects the personalities of the two pilots. The two items are sold separately, but some retailers also offer them as a set.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Rei Ayanami is one of the main Evangelion pilots and a central figure in the saga created by Hideaki Anno. In Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition, she is referred to as the ‘First Girl’ and pilots the Evangelion Prototype-00. The official website describes her as a quiet young girl who rarely shows her emotions and whose behaviour is deliberately enigmatic.

As her missions alongside Shinji Ikari progress, Rei gradually begins to change the way she interacts with others. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance places particular emphasis on this emotional development: after fighting alongside Shinji, she begins to smile and makes a greater effort to form bonds with those around her.

Outside their missions for NERV, Rei, Shinji and Asuka also attend school in Tokyo-3. This XStellar figurine specifically chooses to depict this everyday side of Rei. The chair, her school uniform and her peaceful demeanour momentarily set aside the EVAs and the battles against the Angels to remind us of the teenage life the pilots try to lead alongside their responsibilities.
