Origin and character lore

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are among Disney’s most iconic characters. Both made their public debut on 18 November 1928 in the animated short film *Steamboat Willie*, screened at the Colony Theatre in New York. The film notably marked Mickey’s debut to the general public with a fully synchronised soundtrack.

Minnie has long been portrayed as Mickey’s companion and appears alongside him in numerous Disney short films, series and productions. D23 reports that she has appeared in 74 cartoons alongside Mickey and Pluto, helping to form the core of the universe now known as ‘Mickey & Friends’ from very early on.

Mickey and Minnie’s association with Christmas also has a long history at Disney. The company’s archives include, in particular, a Christmas card from 1931 depicting Mickey singing in front of Minnie’s decorated house, accompanied by Pluto and other characters. This Christmas shopping bag continues this tradition by bringing the famous duo together in an accessory entirely dedicated to the festive season.
