Player’s background and career (Lore)
Franz Beckenbauer was born on 11 September 1945 in Munich. He joined Bayern’s youth teams in 1958 before gradually establishing himself as one of the most important players in the history of the club and German football.
Nicknamed ‘Der Kaiser’ due to his elegance and authority on the pitch, Beckenbauer helped redefine the role of the libero. Rather than simply providing cover behind the defence, he used his technique, vision and passing ability to play a direct part in building attacks.
Between 1965 and 1977, he played 396 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich and scored 44 goals. With the Bavarian club, he won, notably, four German league titles, four German Cups and, most notably, three consecutive European Cup titles in 1974, 1975 and 1976. He also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
His career with the West German national team was equally remarkable. After winning the European Championship in 1972, he captained the World Cup-winning side in 1974. The final, played in Munich, saw West Germany beat the Netherlands 2–1.
His individual performances earned him two Ballon d’Or awards, in 1972 and 1976. He ended his international career with 103 caps and 14 goals.
Beckenbauer then achieved another major feat as manager. After leading West Germany to the 1986 World Cup final, he went on to win the tournament in 1990. He thus became one of the very few men in history to have won the World Cup both as a player and as a manager.
His influence at Bayern continued long after his playing career. In particular, he served as manager and then chairman of the club between 1994 and 2009, before becoming its honorary president. Franz Beckenbauer died on 7 January 2024 at the age of 78 and remains one of the most important figures in the history of Bayern Munich and world football.
