Character background and universe (Lore)

Aang is the main protagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Born among the Air Nomads, he discovers at a very young age that he is the Avatar, the being tasked with maintaining the balance between the four nations and capable of mastering, in turn, air, water, earth and fire.

Initially refusing to accept the weight of this responsibility, Aang flees with his flying bison, Appa, and finds himself caught in a storm. The pair remain trapped inside an iceberg for a hundred years, whilst the Fire Nation wages war against the rest of the world.

Upon waking, Aang discovers that he has become the last known Airbender. Together with Katara, Sokka and several allies he meets along the way, he sets out to learn the other forms of bending so that he can confront Fire Lord Ozai and bring the conflict to an end.

Despite the scale of his mission, Aang remains deeply committed to his people’s pacifist values. His humour, compassion and determination to preserve life make him one of the most memorable heroes in the world of *Avatar: The Last Airbender*.
