In Wicked, Elphaba is a young woman with green skin who possesses exceptional magical abilities, whilst Glinda is a privileged, outgoing student who is particularly concerned with her popularity. Their first meeting at Shiz University gets off to a rocky start, but the two young women gradually develop a deep friendship despite their very different personalities and backgrounds.
The ‘Popular’ number comes after their relationship has begun to evolve. Glinda then decides to take Elphaba under her wing and sets about teaching her how to become more popular: attitude, appearance and social behaviour are all part of this impromptu transformation. The scene relies heavily on the contrast between Glinda’s boundless enthusiasm and Elphaba’s much more reserved personality.
Above all, this passage illustrates how the two heroines grow closer before their choices regarding the Wizard of Oz lead them down opposing paths. Universal summarises their story as that of an unlikely friendship forged in Shiz and destined to lead Elphaba towards her identity as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda towards that of Glinda the Good.
