Jim Hawkins is the protagonist of *Treasure Planet*, a Disney animated feature film directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and released in 2002. The film is a loose adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s *Treasure Island*, set in a science-fiction universe featuring solar-powered ships, alien worlds and space adventures. Disney portrays Jim as a 15-year-old teenager who signs on as a ship’s boy aboard the RLS Legacy to set off in search of the legendary Treasure Planet.
During the voyage, Jim forms a bond with John Silver, the ship’s cyborg cook. Silver gradually becomes a true mentor to the young boy, teaching him to become a more competent and self-assured space sailor. Their relationship is, however, turned upside down when Jim discovers that Silver is in fact the leader of a band of pirates plotting a mutiny to seize the treasure.
The treasure map held by this POP! figure is the starting point for the entire expedition. It reveals the route to the planet where the famous Captain Flint is said to have amassed riches plundered from across the universe. The journey gradually transforms Jim, who evolves from a rebellious teenager with no real direction into a young man capable of standing up to the mutineers and taking control of his own future.
This POP! No. 1821 therefore chooses to depict Jim at the start of his great adventure, map in hand, rather than in the thick of the action on his Solar Surfer, directly highlighting the object that sets his quest across the stars in motion.
