Character background and lore
In the Outer Rim of the Star Wars galaxy, on the arid planet of Tatooine, Watto is a greedy, stubborn Toydarian junk dealer and gambling addict. Owner of a spare parts shop in Mos Espa, he once owned Shmi Skywalker and her young son Anakin after winning them in a dice game against Gardulla the Hutt. Endowed with a tough mind completely impervious to the Jedi’s powers of mental persuasion, Watto is a compulsive gambler who sponsored Anakin in numerous podraces. In Attack of the Clones, marked by bankruptcy and the weight of years, he crosses paths with Anakin once more and nostalgically reveals to him the sale of his mother to the Lars family. This figure celebrates a cult alien whose greed and betting choices indirectly sealed the fate of the galaxy.
