Character background and lore
Released in cinemas in 2020 by Pixar Studios, *Soul* is a philosophical and musical masterpiece that won two Oscars. The story follows Joe Gardner, a music teacher with a passion for jazz who, following an unexpected accident just as he was about to fulfil his dream, finds his soul separated from his body. Stranded in the Great Before — the cosmic realm where new souls acquire their personalities before being sent to Earth — Joe is mistakenly appointed as a mentor to look after the soul known as 22.
22 is a cynical and stubborn soul who has lived in the Great Before for millennia. She has exhausted the patience of the greatest mentors in human history, from Socrates to Abbé Pierre, as she categorically refuses to go to Earth, finding human existence devoid of interest. Depicted as a small blue and green ghost with childlike features, this figurine perfectly captures its mocking attitude and comical detachment. Her unexpected adventure alongside Joe in New York will allow her to discover the value of life’s little everyday joys and finally find her ‘spark’.
