Origin and background of the character
Created by the famous mangaka Rumiko Takahashi, Ranma ½ is a landmark of Japanese comics, blending absurd humour, romance and martial arts. The plot follows Ranma Saotome, a cursed teenager who transforms into a girl upon contact with cold water. During his travels in China, he defeats the champion of the Amazon village, Shampoo. Under her tribe’s laws, she is obliged to pursue him in order to kill him, only to fall head over heels in love with him when she discovers his male form. Also a victim of the cursed springs of Jusenkyo, Shampoo transforms into an adorable little pink cat when she comes into contact with cold water — the very animal of which Ranma has an absolute phobia.
