Origin and character lore
In the lore of the One Piece saga, Gear 5 represents the ultimate awakening of Monkey D. Luffy’s Devil Fruit, revealing his true theological nature, which had been concealed by the World Government for eight centuries: the Human Fruit, in the form of the Sun God Nika. This legendary transformation manifests itself during his life-or-death battle against Emperor Kaidou on the roof of the Onigashima dome in the Land of Wano. As his heartbeat takes on a sacred musical rhythm known as the ‘Drums of Liberation’, Luffy awakens in the guise of the Warrior of Liberation. This state grants him a rubber body endowed with absolute and boundless physical freedom, allowing him to alter reality, the laws of physics and his surroundings according to his pure imagination, fighting whilst laughing heartily to bring joy and break the chains of oppression across the world.
