Based on Naruto Shippuden, this Banpresto figurine depicts Pain, and more specifically his main body known as the Tendô / Deva Path. Part of the Noir Edge Collection, it stands approximately 23 cm tall and reimagines the character in a deliberately dark and desaturated colour scheme, whilst retaining the iconic colours of the Akatsuki.
Pain is depicted standing, clad in the Akatsuki’s long black cloak, adorned with large red clouds edged in white and featuring a red inner lining. The Noir Edge Collection significantly alters his physical appearance: his usually orange hair is rendered here in shades of grey, whilst his skin takes on a very pale hue. His Rinnegan remain visible and his numerous facial piercings are reproduced on his nose, ears and beneath his lower lip.
The figure strikes a simple yet instantly recognisable pose: Pain extends one hand in front of him, palm facing outwards, in a stance reminiscent of his gravitational techniques. The black receptors implanted in his forearm are also visible beneath his rolled-up sleeve. The combination of black, grey and red ensures that this version matches perfectly with the Madara Uchiha (Tobi) and Zetsu figures from the same Noir Edge Collection.
Pain is the identity adopted by Nagato, a former pupil of Jiraiya alongside Yahiko and Konan. The three orphans, scarred by the wars that ravaged the Land of Rain, founded an early version of Akatsuki with the aim of bringing about peace. Following Yahiko’s death and the events that profoundly shook Nagato, this vision evolved into a far more radical conception of peace, based on the collective experience of suffering.
The Pain depicted by this figurine is Tendō, the most recognisable of the Six Paths of Pain. His body is in fact that of Yahiko, controlled remotely by Nagato via black chakra receivers. Tendô possesses, in particular, the gravitational abilities of the Rinnegan, including Shinra Tensei, the technique with which Pain devastates a large part of Konoha. The official Naruto website also identifies Pain as the leader of Akatsuki and highlights his Rinnegan as well as the chakra receivers that connect the various bodies.
The clash between Naruto and Pain is one of the key moments in Naruto Shippuden. After defeating Pain’s various bodies, Naruto finds the real Nagato and confronts his view of the cycle of hatred. Their exchange ultimately leads Nagato to question his beliefs and to use his last remaining strength to undo some of the consequences of his attack on Konoha.
