The Avengers first appeared in Avengers #1, published by Marvel in 1963. The original line-up consisted of Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp, who joined forces after discovering that Loki was behind the threat that had brought them together. The Wasp then suggested the name ‘Avengers’ for the new team.
Captain America soon joined their ranks after his body was discovered trapped in ice in Avengers #4. He went on to become one of the members most closely associated with the team and one of its principal leaders. Over the decades, the line-up of the Avengers has changed considerably, welcoming numerous heroes from the Marvel Universe.
