KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE - Jiji & Jeff - Lunch box 4 locks 530ml

This officially licensed Studio Ghibli ‘Skater’ bento box is dedicated to Kiki’s Delivery Service, and more specifically to Jiji and Jeff. With a capacity of 530 ml, this lunchbox features a single main compartment and has a compact size of approximately 18.6 x 10.8 x 6.2 cm, making it ideal for carrying a lunch, a light meal or a snack. Its lid is secured by four side fastenings to ensure it stays firmly closed whilst being carried.

The design features a scene from the film starring Jiji, Kiki’s famous black cat, accompanied by Jeff, the dog she met during the young witch’s very first delivery. The two characters are illustrated on a pale pink lid bearing the Kiki’s Delivery Service logo. The body of the bento box is in a matching shade of pink, whilst the four contrasting fastenings frame the box and contribute to its soft, retro aesthetic.

Origin and backstory of the characters (Lore)

Kiki’s Delivery Service is an animated film by Studio Ghibli, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in Japan in 1989. It follows Kiki, a 13-year-old witch who must leave home for a year to continue her apprenticeship in a town where no other witches live. Accompanied by her black cat, Jiji, she chooses the coastal town of Koriko and sets up a delivery service there, using her broomstick as a means of transport.

Jiji is Kiki’s faithful companion. Able to converse with her at the start of her journey, he has a cautious and often sarcastic nature that contrasts with the young witch’s enthusiasm. He accompanies her on her travels and plays a direct role in several of her early deliveries.

Jeff is the dog that Jiji meets during the delivery service’s first major mission. Kiki has to transport a soft toy in the shape of a black cat, but loses it following a mishap involving some crows. Whilst she goes off to retrieve the item, Jiji temporarily takes the soft toy’s place at the recipient’s home. Jeff understands the situation and is kind to him, then helps when Kiki returns to discreetly swap the real toy for Jiji.

The ‘Jiji & Jeff’ design on this bento box refers directly to this sequence in the film. It is therefore not simply a decorative pairing of two animals: their encounter marks one of Kiki’s first adventures in her new profession and already illustrates the unexpected mutual support that she and Jiji will encounter as they settle into life in Koriko.
