Origin and background of the character
Severus Snape is one of the most complex, tragic and memorable figures in the saga, having held the posts of Potions Master from 1981 to 1996, Defence Against the Dark Arts Master from 1996 to 1997, and Head of Slytherin House. Promoted to Headmaster of Hogwarts between 1997 and 1998 under the Death Eaters’ regime, the exact nature of his loyalty between Albus Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort remains the central mystery of the plot until the final revelations. A courageous double agent operating in the shadows, his sacrifices and his undying love for Lily Potter played an absolutely decisive role in the Dark Lord’s final defeat.
