Origin and lore
Hogwarts is the British school of witchcraft and wizardry at the heart of the Harry Potter universe. It was founded in the 10th century by four of the greatest wizards and witches of their time: Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin. Each then created a house designed to welcome pupils possessing certain qualities that they wished to encourage.
Gryffindor particularly values courage and bravery, Ravenclaw intelligence and wit, Hufflepuff loyalty and a sense of fairness, whilst Slytherin emphasises cunning and ambition. Upon their arrival at Hogwarts, new pupils are sorted into these four houses by the Sorting Hat.
