Origin and character’s world
Dementors are among the darkest, most sinister and disturbing creatures inhabiting the wizarding world. Former guardians of the dreaded fortress of Azkaban, these sightless beings glide through the air and feed exclusively on humans’ positive emotions. Their mere presence chills the atmosphere, forcing their victims to relive their worst memories until they are plunged into despair or madness. With ministerial authorisation or upon joining Lord Voldemort’s forces, they can inflict the dreaded ‘Detector’s Kiss’, an irreversible sentence consisting of sucking the soul directly through the mouth, leaving the physical body as an empty shell. The only known defence against these spectre-like beings is the summoning of a powerful corporeal Patronus.
