SEGA Goods has released a Luminasta figurine featuring Motoko Kusanagi, the protagonist of the cult 1995 animated film Ghost in the Shell. This figure, measuring approximately 20 cm, captures the Major in a particularly dynamic, airy pose, evoking her extraordinary physical abilities and the many missions undertaken by Section 9.

The sculpture depicts Motoko with her body leaning backwards and her legs bent, supported by a stand that enhances the impression of movement. Her short hair and light-coloured outfit with yellow accents reflect her characteristic cyberpunk aesthetic. The composition rests on a transparent base, allowing the character’s silhouette to dominate the scene.

Made from PVC, this figurine joins SEGA’s Luminasta range, dedicated to characters from numerous animation and pop culture franchises. Measuring 20 cm and featuring a suspended pose, it is designed as a display piece to capture the aesthetic of Mamoru Oshii’s feature film within a collection dedicated to Ghost in the Shell.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Motoko Kusanagi, commonly known as the Major, is the highly capable leader of the Public Security Section 9 assault team. In the Ghost in the Shell universe, she has a fully cybernetic body: with the exception of her brain, her entire body is artificial. This condition grants her considerable physical abilities whilst fuelling her questions about her own identity and what truly defines human existence.

The film Ghost in the Shell, directed by Mamoru Oshii and based on the manga by Masamune Shirow, was released in Japan on 18 November 1995. The plot is set in 2029, in a society where computer networks, cybernetic bodies and neural interfaces are now part of everyday life. Motoko and Section 9 are investigating a mysterious cybercriminal known as the Puppet Master, who is capable of hacking into people’s minds and manipulating their memories.

As the investigation progresses, Motoko is confronted with questions that go far beyond the scope of a simple criminal case: consciousness, memory, identity and the boundary between human and machine become central to the narrative. Her artificial body and her reflections on her own ‘ghost’ thus make the Major one of the most iconic characters in Japanese cyberpunk.
