Origin and character background (Lore)

Balthazar Picsou, known as Scrooge McDuck in the original version, is Donald Duck’s immensely wealthy uncle. Created by Carl Barks, he first appeared in 1947 in the story *Christmas on Bear Mountain* before becoming the hero of his own adventures.

Scrooge built his fortune through hard work, business acumen and his many expeditions around the world. He is particularly famous for his enormous vault in Duckburg, filled with gold coins, as well as for his attachment to the very first penny he ever earned, often referred to as his ‘lucky penny’.

He also becomes the central character in *The Beagle Boys*, where he sets off in search of treasure accompanied, notably, by Huey, Dewey and Louie. This Beast Kingdom piggy bank directly capitalises on his iconic association with money by depicting him atop a veritable mountain of gold coins.
