Origin and character background (Lore)

Tanjiro Kamado is the main protagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a manga created by Koyoharu Gotouge. His life is turned upside down when his family is slaughtered by a demon and his sister Nezuko is transformed into a demonic creature.

Determined to find a way to restore Nezuko’s humanity, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps. He then learns to master various sword-fighting techniques and, in particular, develops the Water Breathing style, before delving deeper into the secrets of Hinokami Kagura, a dance passed down within his family.

Tanjiro stands out as much for his fighting skills as for his deep empathy. Even when facing the demons he must confront, he remains able to perceive their suffering and their past, which plays a major part in shaping his character.

With his green and black chequered haori, his Nichirin sword and his determination to protect his sister, Tanjiro Kamado has become one of the most recognisable characters in Demon Slayer and a major figure in contemporary Japanese manga and animation.
