Metal Gear Solid is an action and stealth game developed and published by Konami, released on PlayStation in 1998. The story is set on the island of Shadow Moses, where a rebel unit of FOXHOUND has seized a nuclear facility and is threatening to use the prototype bipedal weapon, Metal Gear REX.
Solid Snake is an elite soldier specialising in solo infiltration missions. Called back to intervene at Shadow Moses, he must free the hostages, neutralise the members of FOXHOUND and prevent the launch of a nuclear warhead. His composure, his experience in the field and his ability to operate covertly make him one of the most formidable agents of his time.
As he progresses, Snake comes up against the Cyborg Ninja, a fighter equipped with a reinforced exoskeleton and a high-frequency blade. Despite his mechanical appearance and erratic behaviour, he has a deep connection to Snake’s past.
The Cyborg Ninja is in fact Gray Fox, a former member of FOXHOUND and a former adversary of Snake’s. Seriously injured during the events leading up to Metal Gear Solid, he was rescued and subsequently turned into a subject for cybernetic experimentation. His artificial body grants him extraordinary speed, strength and reflexes, but the treatments he underwent have profoundly affected his mind.
Their confrontation in the laboratory is one of the game’s most iconic moments. Gray Fox is not merely seeking to eliminate Snake: he wishes to rediscover the thrill of combat and settle the unfinished business between the two soldiers.
This scene gradually reveals the ninja’s identity and sets the stage for his role in the rest of the story. Despite his suffering and instability, Gray Fox eventually intervenes against Metal Gear REX, allowing Snake to continue his mission and confront Liquid Snake.
