Origin and character background (Lore)

Chucky is the iconic antagonist of the Child’s Play series, which began in cinemas in 1988. Originally, he was a doll from the fictional Good Guy range, a children’s toy designed to look deliberately friendly.

However, the doll becomes the vessel for the soul of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer nicknamed the Lakeshore Strangler. Mortally wounded whilst attempting to escape the police, Ray uses a voodoo ritual to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll.

Chucky thus retains the criminal’s personality and memories whilst maintaining the innocent appearance of a children’s toy. He then sets out to find a human body whilst eliminating anyone who discovers his true nature.

Over the course of the films, Chucky has become one of the most recognisable figures in horror cinema, on a par with several other iconic antagonists of the genre. His combination of a colourful toy-like appearance, black humour and murderous behaviour is one of the defining features of the franchise.
