Origin and world of the character
Carrie White is the main character in Stephen King's 1974 fantasy and horror novel Carrie, immortalised in Brian De Palma's 1976 film adaptation. A shy, lonely teenager overprotected by her obsessively religious mother, Carrie is constantly and cruelly harassed by her school friends. She gradually discovers that she has telekinetic powers (the ability to move objects with her mind), which she learns to manifest under the influence of strong emotions. The plot culminates in the evening of the prom: just as she has been elected queen of the party, a bad joke publicly humiliates her by spilling a bucket of pig's blood on her. This trauma triggers her destructive fury, leading her to use her psychic abilities to seal the gymnasium and wreak merciless vengeance on the entire assembly.
