Character background and universe (Lore)
Winifred ‘Fred’ Burkle is a brilliant scientist from Texas who gradually joins the Angel Investigations team after being rescued from the dimension of Pylea. As the series progresses, her scientific knowledge becomes essential to the investigations carried out by Angel and his allies.
Illyria, meanwhile, is a far older entity. She belongs to the Old Ones, powerful demonic creatures who ruled the Earth long before the emergence of human civilisation. After her disappearance, her essence was preserved for millennia in a sarcophagus placed in the Deeper Well, a site serving as a tomb for ancient entities.
During Season 5 of *Angel*, Illyria’s sarcophagus arrives at the Wolfram & Hart laboratory run by Fred. When she comes into contact with the object, Illyria’s essence enters her system and gradually begins to transform her body.
Despite the efforts of Angel, Spike, Wesley and the rest of the team, Fred cannot be saved without causing the deaths of thousands of other people. She ultimately dies in Wesley’s arms in the episode ‘A Hole in the World’, allowing Illyria to be reborn in her body.
The product name ‘Fred (Illyria Form)’ used by Funko therefore warrants clarification: within the series’ storyline, Fred does not voluntarily transform into Illyria. Illyria takes possession of her body after her death and uses it as a physical vessel, whilst retaining certain memories from Fred.
Illyria possesses largely superhuman strength and endurance, as well as, initially, the ability to manipulate the flow of time. Her immense power initially makes her a threat to Angel and his allies, but the disappearance of her former kingdom and the gradual diminishing of her powers force her to adapt to the modern world.
Wesley then becomes one of her main guides. Despite the pain caused by the fact that Illyria takes on Fred’s appearance, he gradually helps her to understand human emotions and behaviour.
Over the course of the final episodes of *Angel*, Illyria thus evolves from a hostile former deity into a complex ally of the team. This POP! Television No. 1961 depicts the character in her warrior form, complete with her supernatural physical traits, her armour and her battle axe.
