Character background and universe (Lore)
Jean Grey is one of the founding members of the X-Men and one of the most powerful psychic mutants in the Marvel Universe. A telepath and telekinetic of exceptional calibre, she is capable of communicating mentally, reading or influencing thoughts, and moving objects with the power of her mind alone.
Hasbro describes her as an Omega-level mutant, a classification reserved for mutants whose abilities reach an exceptional potential.
Despite this immense power, Jean is traditionally characterised by her empathy and her desire to protect others. She is thus one of the X-Men’s main emotional pillars and shares a particularly significant relationship with Scott Summers, alias Cyclops.
Her story is also deeply intertwined with the Phoenix Force. After becoming bound to this cosmic entity, Jean has faced events capable of affecting not only the X-Men but also the balance of the entire universe.
X-Men ’97 picks up directly where X-Men: The Animated Series left off. In it, Jean is reunited with Scott Summers and the other X-Men as the team must continue to defend mutants and humans amidst an increasingly unstable political climate.
The first series also reveals a particularly complex situation surrounding her identity when Madelyne Pryor, a clone created by Mister Sinister from Jean, discovers the truth about her origins. As both women’s memories have been manipulated, even Jean cannot determine with certainty when the substitution took place.
Jean nevertheless retains a central role within the X-Men and continues to use her telepathic and telekinetic powers to protect her team.
This Marvel Legends figure depicts her new look, as seen in season 2 of X-Men ’97. The yellow and black uniform largely departs from the colours of her previous costume and adopts a more understated aesthetic, whilst retaining the X-Men emblems that immediately identify her as a member of the team.
