Origin and background of the character
Published in 1963 by the American author and illustrator Maurice Sendak, * Where the Wild Things Are* is an absolute masterpiece of children’s and young adult literature, acclaimed worldwide for its psychological insight. The story follows young Max, a mischievous little boy dressed in a wolf costume who, after getting up to all sorts of mischief, finds himself punished and sent to his room without supper. His room then mysteriously transforms into a lush forest bordering the ocean, allowing him to sail to the land of the Wild Things. Far from being afraid of these gigantic creatures with sharp teeth, Max tames them with a single glance and finds himself crowned king of their immense, wild sabbath.
