Character origin and universe
In the dark, dystopian storyline of the graphic novel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, New York City has fallen under the tyrannical rule of Oroku Hiroto, Shredder’s grandson. Leonardo’s fate is one of the major tragedies that led to the downfall of the Hamato clan. As a devoted leader, Leo leads a final attempt to negotiate peace with the Foot Clan in Japan, orchestrated alongside his master Splinter. Unfortunately, this truce turns out to be a Machiavellian trap set by the enemy. Ambushed by relentless waves of cyborg ninjas, Leonardo fights a desperate and fierce battle to protect his master. His heroic sacrifice marks the loss of the brothers’ moral compass, bequeathing his sacred katanas to the sole masked survivor to carry out their final revenge.
