Character background and lore

The Goonies is an adventure film released in 1985, directed by Richard Donner from a story by Steven Spielberg and a screenplay by Chris Columbus. The plot is set in Astoria, Oregon, where Mikey Walsh and his friends live in the Goon Docks neighbourhood. Their families are at risk of losing their homes due to a property development, which also threatens to split the group up for good.

Whilst exploring the Walsh family’s loft, Mikey and his friends discover an old map and a 17th-century doubloon. The map is believed to belong to the pirate Willy the One-Eyed and is said to lead to a treasure that has been lost for centuries. Convinced that this haul could enable their families to save their homes, Mikey persuades his friends to follow the map’s directions, thus setting off on their last great adventure together.

Their journey takes them beneath an old restaurant used as a hideout by the Fratelli family, then through a network of tunnels filled with traps. Mikey remains determined, however, and urges the group to continue the search despite the dangers. The expedition finally takes them to the Inferno, One-Eyed Willy’s ship, where the pirate’s treasure still lies.

Mikey regards One-Eyed Willy as a sort of predecessor to the Goonies and develops a deep respect for the pirate when he finally reaches his ship. Beyond the search for treasure, his adventure symbolises his refusal to abandon his friends, his neighbourhood and the memories that bind them together.
