The cinema projector is one of the most iconic objects in the history of the seventh art. It works by rapidly feeding a sequence of images recorded on film past a light source in order to project them onto a screen.
Towards the end of the 19th century, several inventors developed devices capable of projecting moving images to an audience. These technologies contributed to the birth of cinema as we know it today.
For much of the 20th century, films were distributed on long strips of film wound onto reels. The projector advanced this film frame by frame at high speed, giving the viewer the illusion of continuous motion.
Traditional projectors are thus characterised by their large reels, their gears, their adjustment knobs and the numerous mechanisms used to control the movement of the film.
These devices quickly became an integral part of the image of old projection rooms and the golden age of cinemas.
With the gradual advent of digital projection, film projectors have become less common in modern cinemas, but their mechanical silhouette remains a true symbol of classic cinema and its technical history.
With this 203-piece Vintage Pop Series Film Projector, Madness pays tribute to that era by transforming this iconic machine into a miniature model featuring several visible and moving mechanisms.
