Origin and background of the characters (Lore)

Pokémon is a universe centred on creatures with a wide variety of abilities that Trainers can encounter, catch, train and battle with. Since the first games in the series, exploration, building a team and the bonds formed between Pokémon and their Trainers have taken centre stage.

Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle are the three starter Pokémon offered to the player at the start of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue in the Kanto region. Each represents a different elemental type: Grass for Bulbasaur, Fire for Charmander and Water for Squirtle.

Pikachu, meanwhile, has become one of the most recognisable symbols of the entire franchise. An Electric-type Pokémon, it plays the role of the main partner in Pokémon Yellow and accompanies Ash in the animated series. The gathering of these four characters on this mug thus pays direct homage to the origins and the first generation of Pokémon.
