Character background and lore

Yosuke Hanamura is a second-year pupil at Yasogami High School and one of the first classmates the protagonist meets after arriving in Inaba. He, too, comes from a big city and has had to adapt to life in this small rural town.

His father manages the local branch of the Junes department store, which is why the Hanamura family moved to Inaba a few months earlier. Yosuke regularly spends time in the shop and also works there, making Junes one of the key places in his daily life.

Naturally sociable, enthusiastic and considerate of others, Yosuke quickly becomes close to the protagonist. ATLUS describes him as the group’s self-appointed advisor: he plays an active part in piecing together the mystery surrounding the strange events in Inaba and regularly tries to bring together the ideas of the various team members.

The initial events linked to the Midnight Channel affect him personally and prompt Yosuke to enter the world behind the televisions. There, he is confronted by his own Shadow, a manifestation of feelings and frustrations he had previously refused to acknowledge.

By accepting this hidden part of his personality, Yosuke awakens his Persona, Jiraiya. He then joins the protagonist in investigating the abductions and murders plaguing Inaba, becoming one of the founding members of the Investigation Team.

In battle, his style is traditionally focused on speed and versatility. Jiraiya enables him to use wind-based techniques, whilst Yosuke fights physically with two-handed weapons.

Persona 4 Revival revisits this story as part of a complete remake of Persona 4 Golden. The game retains Yosuke’s fundamental personality: a cheerful and helpful friend, sometimes impulsive, but deeply devoted to the group and fully committed to uncovering the truth.
