ONE PIECE - Monkey D. Luffy - Figure Maximaticplus 20x23cm

From the world of One Piece, this Banpresto figurine depicts Monkey D. Luffy using Gear 2, one of his iconic battle transformations. Part of the MAXIMATICPLUS range, this second version – officially titled MAXIMATICPLUS MONKEY.D.LUFFY II – combines a particularly dynamic pose with an impressive smoke effect designed to visualise the activation of Gear 2. 

Luffy is depicted in full flight, in a very low stance with his legs spread wide apart. His torso is turned, one open hand thrust forwards whilst the other arm is pulled back, giving the impression of an attack ready to be unleashed. His determined expression, clenched teeth and wide-open eyes heighten the intensity of the scene.

The figure features his recognisable outfit: an open red jacket, orange shorts, sandals and a straw hat slung over his back. Surrounding him, a dramatic smoke effect complements the pose. Bandai Spirits has officially stated that the character’s colour scheme and this effect have been specially designed to replicate the appearance of Gear 2.

The MAXIMATICPLUS range favours large-scale sculptures and very open compositions. This version therefore makes the most of both height and depth: although Luffy measures around 20 to 21 cm in height, his posture and the effects bring the total depth to around 23 to 24 cm. Fully pre-painted and non-articulated, it is made from PVC, with ABS also mentioned by some retailers.

Character background and universe (Lore)

Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the protagonist of One Piece. Originally from the village of Fuchsia in the East Blue, he sets sail with a goal that never wavers despite the obstacles: to traverse the Grand Line, discover the legendary One Piece left behind by Gol D. Roger, and become the Pirate King. His straw hat was entrusted to him during his childhood by Shanks the Red, with the promise that it would be returned to him once he had become a great pirate.

Luffy possesses a body with elastic properties thanks to the power of the Devil Fruit he ate as a child. Throughout his journey, he transforms these abilities into increasingly sophisticated combat techniques and, in particular, develops various forms known as Gears.

Gear 2 is one of his first major combat evolutions. By drastically accelerating his blood flow, Luffy temporarily increases his speed and physical performance. This technique is particularly recognisable by the steam escaping from his body, a feature directly replicated by Banpresto for this MAXIMATICPLUS II figurine.

This figure therefore focuses on Luffy in the thick of the action rather than in a static pose: his very low stance, the movement of his clothes and the thick cloud of steam surrounding him visually emphasise the speed and energy associated with Gear 2, whilst retaining the iconic features of the Straw Hat Captain.
