Origin and backstory of the characters (Lore)

‘Astonishing X-Men’ refers in particular to the Marvel series launched in 2004, written by Joss Whedon and illustrated by John Cassaday. This run features a team comprising Cyclops, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Beast and Kitty Pryde, with the aim of reintroducing the X-Men to the public as a genuine superhero team.

Cyclops, whose real name is Scott Summers, is one of the X-Men’s founding members and principal leaders. His mutant power enables him to project powerful bursts of energy from his eyes. Unable to control them naturally on a permanent basis, he uses ruby-quartz lenses and a special visor to regulate the power and range of his blasts.

In *Astonishing X-Men*, Scott takes centre stage following Jean Grey’s apparent disappearance. Alongside Emma Frost, he helps to reorganise the team and must fully embrace his leadership role amidst the X-Men’s particularly complex internal dynamics.

Wolverine, also known as Logan, is a mutant with a powerful healing factor, highly developed senses and retractable claws. His skeleton was reinforced with adamantium as part of the Weapon X programme, making him one of the team’s most formidable fighters.
