Character origin and lore
In Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning masterpiece released in 2001, Spirited Away, the Ootorisama (or chicken gods) are minor deities from Japanese mythology who come to relax at the luxurious bathhouse (Aburaya) run by the witch Yubaba. Resembling giant anthropomorphic chicks or ducks, these benevolent spirits usually travel in tight-knit groups and are particularly fond of aromatic hot baths to wash away the impurities accumulated in the human world.
