Origin and character lore
In Hayao Miyazaki’s 1986 masterpiece, *Castle in the Sky*, the squirrel-fox — or Kitsune-Risu — is a small wild creature native to the floating city of Laputa. Living in perfect harmony with nature and the majestic guardian robots of the abandoned fortress, this shy animal symbolises the purity and resilience of the natural world in the face of mankind’s destructive folly.
