Character background and universe (Lore)
Kafka Hibino is the protagonist of Kaiju No. 8. Aged 32, he initially works for a company responsible for clearing away the remains of kaiju following interventions by the Defence Forces. During his childhood, however, he had promised his friend Mina Ashiro that he would join her in the organisation responsible for fighting these creatures. Whilst Mina has become captain of the Third Division, Kafka has long failed to realise this dream.
His life is turned upside down when he swallows a mysterious, larva-like creature and gains the ability to transform into a humanoid kaiju of exceptional power. The Defence Forces identify this new creature as Kaiju No. 8. Kafka nevertheless decides to pursue his goal and manages to join the Third Division whilst concealing his true nature.
In his Kaiju No. 8 form, Kafka possesses extraordinary strength and endurance, enabling him to directly confront monsters capable of overpowering ordinary soldiers. His professional experience in dealing with kaiju also gives him an in-depth understanding of their anatomy, which he utilises even when fighting in his human form.
During Kaiju No. 10’s attack on the Tachikawa base, Kafka is finally forced to reveal his transformation to his comrades in order to protect them. Captured by the Defence Forces, he nevertheless escapes immediate transformation into a weapon thanks to a decision by Isao Shinomiya. He must then prove that he remains capable of controlling the power of Kaiju No. 8 and that he can continue to use it to defend humanity.
This ‘Bloody’ version particularly emphasises the brutal nature of his battles: behind the monstrous appearance of Kaiju No. 8 lies Kafka Hibino, a man determined to use this power—normally regarded as the enemy—to protect his companions and pursue his dream of fighting alongside Mina.
