Origin and background of the character

Horace E. F. Slughorn was a Potions teacher and Head of Slytherin House between the 1940s and 1981, when he retired from teaching for the first time. During this period, he founded Slug Club, a society comprising students hand-picked for their potential or connections, whilst tending to ignore less influential pupils such as Arthur Weasley. In 1942, during a dinner with this club, he made the mistake of explaining the concept of a Horcrux to the young Tom Riddle, who would later use this secret information to create seven Horcruxes and become immortal. Racked with remorse all his life, Horace also counted Lily Potter among his favourite pupils before returning to teach at Hogwarts years later.
