Origin and lore
Slytherin is one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was founded by Salazar Slytherin, one of the four wizards who founded the school alongside Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff. The Sorting Hat assigns students to this house if it detects ambition, cunning, determination and a strong will to succeed.
The house’s official colours are emerald green and silver, whilst its emblem is the serpent. This choice is notably linked to Salazar Slytherin, who possessed the rare ability to speak Parseltongue, a language enabling communication with snakes. This association is also found in the Chamber of Secrets, secretly created by the founder and hidden beneath Hogwarts.
The Slytherin common room is situated in the dungeons of Hogwarts, beneath the lake. Hidden behind a wall and accessible via a password, it is bathed in a greenish light from the water on the other side of its windows. Its dark and majestic atmosphere contributes significantly to the house’s visual identity.
Slytherin counts among its members several major characters from the series, notably Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy and Tom Riddle, the future Lord Voldemort.
