Origin and lore of the creature
First introduced in 1988 in the video game Final Fantasy II, the Chocobo is a large bird, generally unable to fly in the wild, which has become the iconic symbol of Square Enix’s cult series. Used throughout the various instalments as a land-based mount by the heroes to traverse vast continents, it serves as a friendly alternative to horses. Recognisable by their characteristic cry of ‘Kweh!’, Chocobos coexist peacefully with humans and other races in the franchise. They have their own iconic theme tune, come in several colours associated with unique terrain-crossing abilities (rivers, mountains) and are sometimes the focus of major side activities, such as breeding or high-speed races in dedicated stadiums.
