Origin and symbolism (Lore)

The kanji 亀, meaning ‘turtle’, is directly associated with Kamé Sennin and his martial arts school. Goku wears this symbol on his dōgi after being trained by the master alongside Krillin. Throughout Dragon Ball, this emblem becomes one of the most recognisable visual symbols of his training as a fighter.

At the start of Dragon Ball Z, Goku continues his training in the Afterlife under Master Kaio to prepare for the arrival of the Saiyans. There, he learns, in particular, the Kaioken and the Genki Dama, two techniques that will prove decisive in many of his battles. On his return to Earth, his outfit reflects this new stage in his training by combining references to the Turtle School and Master Kaio.
