Origin and character background (Lore)

Son Goku is the main protagonist of Dragon Ball, a series created by Akira Toriyama. Initially portrayed as a young boy with exceptional strength and a monkey’s tail, he gradually discovers his extraterrestrial origins: Goku belongs to the warrior race of the Saiyans and was sent to Earth whilst still a baby.

Raised by Son Gohan, Goku develops a passion for martial arts at a very early age. In particular, he becomes a pupil of Master Roshi, then continues his training under numerous masters throughout his adventures. His constant desire to improve and face ever-stronger opponents is one of the main driving forces behind the saga.

In Dragon Ball Z, Goku faces off against Vegeta, Frieza, Cell and Majin Buu, amongst others. He develops various transformations and techniques that have become iconic to the franchise, including the Super Saiyan, the Kamehameha and the Genki Dama.

The kanji 悟 featured on this jumper corresponds to the first character of Goku’s Japanese first name, 悟空. It is notably used on some of his martial arts outfits following the period during which he wore the emblems of his various masters. Its inclusion in the garment’s design thus directly reinforces the connection with the character.
