Description

Microids Records is re-releasing *Dragon Ball Z – Best Collection* in a version specially designed for vinyl collectors. This double LP brings together 15 iconic tracks from the soundtrack of the Dragon Ball Z animated series, including the Japanese theme songs ‘CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA’ and ‘WE GOTTA POWER’. This new edition stands out thanks to its two translucent, blue-and-green marbled discs.

The Blue Green Marbled pressing combines different shades of blue and green within the vinyl itself. Each disc therefore has a marbled finish, the appearance of which may vary slightly from one copy to another. Both discs are 12-inch in size and play at 33 revolutions per minute. This variant is billed as a limited edition, with no total production figure disclosed.

The selection spans several musical periods from Dragon Ball Z. It notably includes ‘CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA’, the first Japanese opening theme performed by Hironobu Kageyama, as well as ‘WE GOTTA POWER’ and ‘We Were Angels’, associated with the series’ final major era. Other tracks refer to the battles, the films and the various opponents faced by Son Goku and his companions. The music featured on this compilation includes contributions from Chiho Kiyooka, Takeshi Ike and Keiju Ishikawa.

The 15 tracks are spread across four sides. The first disc includes ‘CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA’, ‘Battle (I-KU-SA)’, ‘Journey of Light’ and ‘The Strongest Rival’, whilst the second features, amongst others, ‘MIND POWER –Ki–’, ‘Burning Fight – The Burning Battles’, ‘Day of Destiny – Soul vs Soul –’, ‘WE GOTTA POWER’ and ‘We Were Angels’.

Origin and background of the franchise (Lore)

Dragon Ball Z is the second major animated series adapted from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. Produced by Toei Animation from 1989 onwards, it comprises 291 episodes and continues the story of Son Goku several years after the events of the first Dragon Ball series. Goku is now the father of Son Gohan when the arrival of the Saiyan Raditz reveals his true alien origins.

This revelation marks the beginning of a series of increasingly major conflicts. Goku and his allies face, in particular, the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa, Emperor Frieza, the cyborgs created by Dr Gero, Cell and then Majin Buu. The battles gradually extend beyond Earth, taking the heroes to other planets, into the afterlife, and pitting them against adversaries capable of threatening entire worlds.

Dragon Ball Z also develops the concept of the Super Saiyan transformation, which has become one of the franchise’s most recognisable features. Son Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo, Trunks, Krillin and the other fighters each take centre stage alongside Goku in turn, whilst the series constantly evolves the techniques, power levels and stakes of its battles.

The music plays a major part in this identity. ‘CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA’ accompanies much of the Japanese series, whilst ‘WE GOTTA POWER’ takes over for the final story arcs. The instrumental tracks and songs brought together on *Best Collection* thus cover various stages in the evolution of *Dragon Ball Z*, from the Saiyans’ earliest confrontations right through to the series’ later battles.

This Blue Green Marbled Edition finally transforms this musical selection into a collector’s item: the two coloured vinyl records combine a distinctive visual presentation with the themes and songs that accompanied many of Dragon Ball Z’s most memorable moments.
