Origin and backstory of the character (Lore)
Jack Skellington is the main character in The Nightmare Before Christmas. Known as the Pumpkin King, he is the biggest celebrity in Halloween Town and oversees the preparations for the festival every year. Despite his talent for scaring people, Jack eventually grows tired of this routine and feels the need to discover something new.
When he discovers Christmas Town, he is fascinated by the lights, the presents and the joyful atmosphere of Christmas. He then decides to organise the festivities himself with the inhabitants of Halloween Town, without really understanding the traditions he is trying to recreate. His plan ends up putting Father Christmas in danger and turns his attempt at a celebration into a chaotic adventure.
His immense skeletal figure, his black striped costume and his round face with a stitched-on smile have become the film’s key visual symbols. This jacket takes a particularly direct approach by featuring a large image of his face on the back, whilst its black colour and monochrome design remain true to the gothic aesthetic of Halloween Town.
